Early Years Foundation Stage - EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage at Jesson's

Nursery and Reception form what is known as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS has its own curriculum based on the main developmental stages of a child’s life from birth to age 5 which lead to Early Learning Goals at the end of the Reception year.

It is a ‘play based’ curriculum, which means that learning takes place through planned, purposeful play, in addition to a mixture of child-initiated and adult led activities.

"All children deserve the care and support they need to have the best start in life. Children learn and develop at a faster rate from birth to five years old than at any other time in their lives, so their experiences in early years have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe, and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high-quality early learning provide the foundation children need to fulfill their potential."

EYFS Statutory Framework 2024

The curriculum is divided into ‘Seven Areas of Learning’, which are all interconnected. The ‘Prime Areas’ are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The remaining four areas are called ‘Specific Areas’:

  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Characteristics of Effectively Learning:

The focus of the Characteristics of Effective Learning is on how children learn rather than what they learn.  The three CoEL are:

  • playing and exploring
  • active learning
  • creating and thinking critically

As part of our Early Years provision, we offer Time for Twos for two-year-olds. This is for children the term after their second birthday.  It is a great opportunity for children to continue to learn and develop skills before they start Nursery.

Our sessions run Monday to Friday:-

Morning sessions - 8.45 am until 11.45 am

Afternoon sessions - 11.45 am until 2.45 pm

You can apply for a place at Jesson's Time for Twos by filling out the online application form using the link below.

Primary School Admissions

The following link has all the information you require for applying for children who will be starting reception: https://www.dudley.gov.uk/residents/learning-and-school/school-information/school-admissions/primary-reception-intake/

Reception

For children starting our reception, we will ensure a smooth transition.  This includes children who have attended our nursery and children new to our school.  We will do this through phone calls, visits to school and visits to your home to get to know your child.  There are a wide range of knowledge and skills that are developed during the reception year to help children reach the expected level of the Early Learning Goals at the end of the year.

We have three classes in Reception:

Reception Blue

Reception Red

Reception Yellow

Each child has a reading book that they can take home.  These are changed weekly.

We use our outdoor area daily in all weathers.  We ask if wellies could be provided so children can join in with outdoor activities.
